In general terms, we mean that there are lots of different types of employees: full-time employees with day jobs, part-timers who have flexible schedules or telecommuting options, and freelancers who may work remotely for short periods or for multiple clients. The world has changed since when I wrote this post in 2007. In fact, in some ways it still has not changed Apple Headphones very much at all. While the pool of workers available to businesses is now much larger than it was ten years ago (when there were fewer “traditional” job positions), an increasing number still like to see themselves as “salaried workers” (i.e., their primary focus is on benefits and bonuses). Their orientation towards this model is changing more slowly as they become less young (and therefore more likely to feel they are entitled to benefits), but it remains pervasive throughout many industries in many forms (a recent study found that more than half of new college graduates would prefer a salary under $50K compared to $100K or more).
